Undoubtedly, the Pioneer Memorial Library is one of the most stunning buildings in Fredericksburg. This historic structure has a fascinating history as the second courthouse for Gillespie County, designed by the renowned architect Alfred Giles. The stone for the project was sourced from a quarry located just northeast of town. The building was constructed in 1881/1882 and functioned as the courthouse until 1939. The building underwent renovations from 1966-77, thanks to the generous support of Mr. and Mrs. Eugene McDermott. It was officially dedicated as the library in 1967. Today, the library provides a wide range of resources, both in print and online, along with a dedicated section for children. My experience at this “desperately in need of modernization” location— Main complaint here is staff! Awful demeanor Any request for any type of assistance, will be met with rolling of eyes and heavy breathing—as if you are asking “for the moon and stars!” Sad actually, because this former schoolteacher loves libraries

Beautiful old library with a little used bookstore inside. The used books were very inexpensive and in good condition. The library is well organized and has interesting historical information and pictures inside.

Nice place, has a variety of things to check out. I do wish they had a bigger selection, but they have a lot more perks than other libraries I've been to, like the online language learning and being able to request certain books. I haven't tried everything yet. Getting a library card was easy. Their used book store seems to rely on the honor system, which was new for me, but refreshing. They had some manga, though limited and incomplete, they had some fairly new series available to check out. I think the little kids stuff is on the first floor while everything else is on the second floor. Their DVDs seemed to range from popular classics, to fairly new, to the obscure. So it's kind of a hit or miss on if you'll find something you like. The second floor flooring does seem to need some attention though, it creaks a lot over wide areas and seems oddly thin, and everything echoes a bit so the sound of people walking around is hard to miss no matter where you are. (Might just be missing carpet underlayment and some nails are coming loose, or maybe the osb needs replacing with something thicker. Dunno. It'll handle people alright, but I'd be nervous if I had to move some furniture around up there.) Just means that I probably wouldn't try to study here for long periods of time. The person I was with said it smelled musty in some places, but I didn't really notice, I'm used to libraries and old books smell.

What a beautiful and cozy library! Everything is so lovely. They even have a used bookstore with so many good books, audiobooks, and DVDs—all for just $1–2.

A beautiful library to visit while you're in fredericksburg! They have a used book store in the back, and two storeys (pun intended) of collections to look through! We came on our anniversary and the staff were absolutely lovely and helpful, and the library itself is a beautiful history-filled space to wander through.

This library is a piece of Texas historical art work. They have maintained it SO WELL. The mini book store is also definitely worth visiting as well. So thankful to have the opportunity to visit and the staff was the sweetest!!!!

A beautiful library in the heart of Fredericksburg. Not to busy but a great selection of books for everyone. They have a readying area for small children and even a used book section for purchasing in the back if you are just passing through the town and need something to read on your journey.

The staff members were genuine, accommodating, kind, and very patient. They put in endless effort to help me figure out how to access my medical x-rays from a CD that isn't Mac compatible, but we succeeded! I wholeheartedly advise coming here for assistance with any technical issues, quiet completion of schoolwork, book reading, computer access, and more. Everything about the atmosphere is just wonderful.

Pioneer Memorial Library is where people go who love to read or study in a quiet old fashioned atmosphere. It is housed in the building that used to be a court house. It has tall ceilings and large windows on both floors. The children's books on the first floor, adult and Texas history on the second.

Adds such a wonderful green area in the middle of downtown Fredericksburg. Beautiful iconic building surrounded by lush lawns and gardens. Did not get a chance to see the inside but is definitely on the short list of place to visit next time I'm in Fredericksburg.

Absolutely beautiful building and grounds! We were merely strolling past it and had to stop. Lush landscaping, the architecture, and the eagle out front were just gorgeous. Didn’t get to go inside, though I wish we could have. We did peak through the doors, though! Will have to return one day to check it out. But the exterior was great!
