    What makes it fun

Visit Der Lindenbaum if you're looking for a dining experience that's genuinely one of a kind in Fredericksburg, Texas. The German settlers who founded Fredericksburg more than a century ago constructed the lovely old limestone structure that now houses the restaurant. The restaurant has an environment that is homey, pleasant, and welcoming to its guests. Schnitzel, steaks, and delicious sandwiches are some of the German specialties that can be found at Ingrid Hohmann's restaurant, which is considered to be among the best German restaurants in Texas. Don't forget to save room for dessert with one of our homemade cakes. There is a big selection of beers from Germany, as well as a choice of wines from both Germany and Texas.

⭐ 1/5 – Very Disappointing Experience Unfortunately, our dinner at Der Lindenbaum was extremely disappointing. The restaurant feels very old and outdated, and there was an unpleasant, musty smell as soon as we walked in. The food was overly sweet, which was unexpected and unpleasant for savory dishes. Another major issue was that the menu did not clearly list the ingredients, making it difficult to know what we were actually ordering. The menu had very limited options, and the portions were quite small considering the high prices. The quality, taste, and overall dining experience simply did not justify the cost. In my opinion, this restaurant is extremely overpriced for what it offers and honestly not even worth trying. We left very disappointed and would not recommend it.

⭐ 1/5 — Disappointing Food, Unprofessional Service, and a Surprise Credit Card Fee My experience at Der Lindenbaum was disappointing from the moment I walked through the door. When I entered, I was the only customer in the entire restaurant. The waitresses were sitting together at a table, and one of them greeted me by saying, “We’re on our break, go away.” I actually started turning around to leave before she laughed and told me she was joking. No apology, just “I was kidding.” Perhaps she thought it was funny, but I found it rude and completely unprofessional. That’s certainly an unusual way to welcome your only customer. Unfortunately, the food did nothing to improve the experience. It was bland, flavourless and thoroughly underwhelming. For a restaurant advertising authentic German cuisine, I expected considerably better. What made the service particularly disappointing was that not once during my meal did the waitress return to ask how everything was. Not a single courtesy check to see whether I was enjoying the food or needed anything. Considering I was the only customer when I arrived, the lack of attention was especially surprising. I was left with the distinct impression that customers were more of an inconvenience than a priority. Then came the final irritation. Only AFTER I had finished my meal was I informed that paying by credit card would incur an additional 3% charge. This should have been clearly communicated before I ordered, not sprung on me when it was time to pay. I have no objection to paying good money for good food and service, but this experience delivered neither. Fredericksburg has plenty of dining options, and based on my experience, I wouldn’t return or recommend this restaurant. Looking back, my biggest regret is that I didn’t trust my gut instinct and keep walking out the door when I was first told to go away. I should have listened to it.

Ordered the Jägerschnitzel with potato salad and red cabbage. The sauce on the schnitzel had an off taste. It seemed to lack richness the sauce usually has. The potatoes were tasty and the red cabbage was average. For a specialty restaurant I would have expected the food to be more authentic. If I were to return to Fredericksburg I would sample a different place.

AMAZING food! We kept saying throughout the meal how delicious everything was! I had the Jager Schnitzel, warm potato salad, and red cabbage and my husband had the Beef Gulasch with buttered noodles. We will be back!

I am from a German family background, speak the language, studied in Germany, and done extensive travelling in Germany (so has my wife). There are indeed several excellent German restaurants in the Texas Hill Country. Der Lindenbaum is one of the better ones in my opinion. Have never had a bad meal there. The place will fill up quickly on weekends and holidays, so don't wait too late to have your lunch/dinner. Once it gets crowded, you will wait a bit for the meal, but they really are no slower than any other crowded restaurant in Fredericksburg. Have always had friendly service and we've even chatted with Chef/owner from time to time when its not crowded. My wife enjoys any of the schnitzels. My favorite is the Currywurst. Chef makes her own curry sauce and is the best I've had outside of Germany and rivals some I've had in Berlin. The potato salad my not seem 'usual' to some because there is no single German style potato salad. It varies regionally and is often determined by where the Chef is from. But don't be shy, maybe its time to try something different. It's no different than saying you've always had New York style pizza and then wondering why the pizza in Chicago is different.

Lived in Europe for three years and all over the US. This is the BEST most authentic German food I've had in America. Incredible service and cozy setting. It's a hidden gem in plain sight. Everyone visiting Fredericksburg winds up in the tourist traps across the street eating sub food. 🤷

Cute little place with fantastic food and good prices. My family and I loved every bit of it and the staff were wonderful. When they come back in town to visit again, we will definitely be coming back here. (Parking is in the back!)

This felt like the most authentic German place we visited. The sausages were great. The Jager schnitzel was perfectly cooked. The beers were refreshing. We loved it.

We love this little restaurant in Fbg. The staff is always so welcoming and the food and atmosphere is always warm and delightful. It is a small restaurant in an old building so it has wonderful charm about it. Whenever we want some great German food at a great price we visit!

Come hungry for schnitzel. The variety is good and the quality is better. There are some other things on the menu but that's the star. It's authentic and to die for. Even better, the cabbage on the side is delicious and the potato salad is great. Prices aren't low but you have to pay for quality!

Service is horrible. The food is pretty good. Went there for lunch and the food was pretty good compared to others we had experienced. The waitress was miserable. I have never felt so unwelcome in a place before. Tried to be as nice as possible because maybe she was having a bad day but no she was just miserable the whole time. Came back around dinner time to try to get some desserts to take back to the hotel. The guy was really rude. For some reason he wouldn't serve my fiance and had her in tears. It's unfortunate that they are this way. Choose wisely.

This restaurant is a nice place if you want to have a German-inspired dinner. The service there is great; our order was served quickly, and the staff was really attentive. We ordered Kasseler Rippchen: a smoked pork chop with sauerkraut. The meat was delicious and paired well with all the side dishes. We also tried Kase Schnitzel, which was served with a generous amount of cheese, was crispy, and well-seasoned. For dessert, I really enjoyed the chocolate mousse cake; it was well-balanced in sweetness and very tasty. Of course, for winter time, I recommend ordering the Gluhwein and pairing it with your dinner.

I was born and raised in Germany. Lindenbaum offers authentic German food, so eating there is a must when visiting Fredericksburg! We had the classic schnitzel and "Ungarischer Gulasch" (Hungarian goulash). I grew up eating these dishes and loved them. I was so excited that I forgot to take pictures lol Anyway, the schnitzel is made with pork, pan fried and served with lemon. All three facts make it authentic and super delicious :) The red cabbage was slightly sweet and cooked with gloves. Super yummy! The goulash was tender and flavorful. We also ordered the bread. It is not as dense and heavy (literally) as German bread. This is a good move in the US because you don't have to get used to a different texture. The taste reminded me a lot of German caraway bread! We had seconds, because they even offer free bread refills. Besides imported regular German beer, they also offered a non-alcoholic one. Most of the staff seem to have been born in Germany. Regardless, they all spoke German and were super nice :) It's a rustic & cute place. If you want to feel like you are eating an authentic meal, just like people in Germany would, you should definitely go to Lindenbaum!

Very authentic German food. The atmosphere was perfect from the decor to the servers accent. We walked in and knew we made the right choice. We tried the Burgermiester Platte as well as the marble rye. The polish sausage was my favorite my husband loved the knackwurst and the potato salad. We also tried the black forest cake, which was delicious.
