    What makes it fun

The Airport Diner is a traditional 1940s diner located close to the Gillespie County Airport aircraft parking ramp and next door to the Hangar Hotel. You may watch planes and other aircraft come and go from the booths while eating fantastic sandwiches, breakfast every time we're open, and the daily blue plate specials. Our retro diner is more than simply a location to get some food; it's a unique ambiance where you can relax and have a wonderful meal while experiencing the past. And you never know what might land right outside your window!

Flying in for lunch was a fun adventure. The Diner is great, it brings back a nostalgic thought of the early diners. The food was very good, burger, rings and a shake make for a fun/satisfying fly-in meal. Best of all our waitress was fantastic. She was very nice and attentive to our needs with a fun sense of humor. I will definitely be flying friends back many times to enjoy the experience.

Pretty cool place. McDonough reasonably good job of turning it into a 1950s Style diner. And with airplanes landing outside that makes it pretty cool as well

I had the SOS (Biscuits and gravy) Biscuits tasted like they were microwaved from the previous morning, were barely warm and were very dry. The sausage was served room temperature and got cold quick.
My waitress looked very unhappy from the moment she came to my table but you never know what someone is going through so I don't mind.

First time experience at this diner. Dropped in for lunch on our way to the Nimitz Museum. I have traveled to many places around the world--even within the U.S. and my family and I learned to keep any open mind about a lot of things--patience and understanding just to name a couple. Once people post something on the internet about a place to see/visit/experience--people (tourists) will over-run that location. This happens to a lot of places so we were prepared for the waiting. What do you expect? Yes, this diner is small (limited seating) and people come and go. When it get's hectic--you have to wait a little--something many just don't care to do or don't have the patience. Service expediency did take a hit during our visit. Yes, we had to wait, and the sign at the door said to seat yourself when something comes open. Once we sat down, it took about five minutes for the waitress to take our order--place was extremely busy on that day. It was a little loud. A lot of families that day. Once our waitress took our order--took about 6-10 min to get our food. We had a combo of breakfast and my daughter had a sandwich with a side. Overall, the food was ok. Pretty standard stuff. We liked the historical atmosphere as airplanes were coming and going. We were able to checkout the moment we were given the check. Overall, satisfied with the experience.

We enjoyed a nice breakfast at this diner. It's fun watching the planes land and take off. Service was good.
They have a cool hotel next door with a beautiful bar.

I’ve flown into Gillespie County Airport multiple times specifically to visit Airport Diner, and I really wanted to like this place—but after three visits, I think it’s fair to say the experience has been consistently underwhelming.

The biggest strength here is the location. It’s right on the ramp with beautiful runway views, which makes it one of the more unique airport dining spots in Fredericksburg. That said, the diner seems to rely heavily on the ambiance rather than the food or service. There’s limited seating, and the lack of an outdoor patio feels like a missed opportunity given how great the setting is.

Service has been consistently slow, likely due to being understaffed. It’s a self-seat setup, but even after being seated, it can take a while to get attention. On multiple visits, parts of the menu were unavailable, which I assume is to help the kitchen keep up.

Food has been hit-or-miss, leaning more toward miss:
    • Breakfast tacos were about a 5/10
    • Eggs ordered over-easy came out overcooked and broken
    • Grits were watery
    • Sausage and bacon tasted like they were previously frozen
    • On a later visit, breakfast orders weren’t even being accepted due to kitchen backlog

We ended up ordering a burger and a wrap instead. The wrap was overly thick with uneven filling distribution, and the burger was average at best. Also, the advertised sweet potato tots were substituted with fries without much notice.

Overall, this is a great place to enjoy the airport atmosphere and runway views, but the food quality and service unfortunately don’t match the setting. With better staffing and consistency in the kitchen, this could easily be one of the best casual dining spots in Fredericksburg.

Well this is a hidden gem, off the beaten path but worth it. This 40's themed diner is a step back in time and I love it! Take in the decor inside and the runway outside. We had a wonderful time sitting in our booth watching planes and helicopters take off and land. It was a weekend afternoon and they were packed, and for good reason. The burgers and breakfast we had was great! But it is a small place with a small place, so be patient. We will definitely be back!

The good stuff first: its a cool location with a cool design. We were able to watch airplanes land and takeoff. The 50s diner vibe with an airplane theme is spot on.
    The rest is bad:
There's no greeter, no sign in sheet, no space to stand and wait. It was very busy and the chalkboard when you walk in tells you to wait and not to sit at a dirty table. Every table was full. There's room for about four people to stand inside the door with no place for my elderly parents to sit while we waited. A table finally came open and we waited until the bus boy started clearing before we went to sit figuring he would have it cleared quickly. He was moving at the pace of molasses. There was absolutely no regard to the people waiting to sit or any communication We were told by another employee to go back to the front door. Once he finally finished and away, we went back to the table. He didn't wipe it but left the spray bottle and towel on the seat. I sprayed and wiped the table. A lady came and snatched the stuff off the table like I did something wrong, again without speaking.
We waited almost an hour for our food and it was NOT worth the wait. My dad's chicken fried steak was inedible, my pancakes were dry and mediocre, my mom's sandwich was small and plain. It just wasn't good.
Would I go back? Absolutely not. You can go stand outside the restaurant and watch the planes then go eat somewhere with good food and friendly staff.

We flew down here from KSJT and while west texas is a whole lot of nothing its about the destination. Friendly staff and a diverse breakfast lunch menu. I had the Reuben and breakfast tacos. Excellent and the portions were unexpectedly large. Shouldve had a milkshake, but wouldve passed.

Very cool place set on the war era right next to a small airport. You can watch small prop and jet planes take off and land while you eat. We came at a very busy time and the wait was still acceptable. My migas were great and Megan’s club sandwich was yummy. Cool place for a different kind of experience.

Cool place to experience in Fredericksburg. The building, hanger, hotel and runway are all in walking distance of one another. You cant beat watching the different aircraft fly in and out over lunch. You can order breakfast during lunch too! We enjoyed all the food we tried on our visit.

Great airport to fly in and have a nite at the diner. The diner is really nice and has classic diner stype seating. The food was great and the service friendly. Looking forward to going back to try the shakes and malts. Recommend this place to any pikit looking for a fly-in meal.

Great stop on a Saturday morning before we hit the wineries. No wait to get in, and the service was quick and friendly. Food came out quick and was good! On top of that, we got to see several planes land!

Let us begin with this... I love history. As a veteran, I like learning about places, its history, and eating well too. This place is a classic diner with a twist. I ordered the Bomber burger, the kid wanted pancakes. We came here on a whim, seeing I wanted to eat. Being as we are not far from home, I was delighted to pop in here. I have seen and heard it mentioned, so why not. Our waitress, Kaylee, was on point and sweet as could be. Definitely worth a visit if you can.

This place is great to visit for the setting of the dinner and its location. The menu is filled with many delicious options and the names of the entres are fun. We recommend the Bravo Lina Tango and the meatloaf. We drove one hour to get there, but we definitely are coming back at the next opportunity.
