What makes it fun
A 14-year-old Moravian kid left for America in 1895. After his ship docked in Galveston, the child was enslaved to gather cotton for his voyage. His hard work allowed him to escape and settle in Elk, Texas. His hard work continued to pay off, and he owned several Cotton Gins and the Elk General Store. That boy was John Cyril Smajstrla, our great-grandfather. People knew the Elk Store would provide their necessities during Prohibition and the Great Depression. Our great-grandfather moonshined during prohibition. We still make all our Sprits by hand on Main Street in Fredericksburg. The Elk Store Winery & Distillery by making excellent small-batch moonshine, gin, rum, and whiskey daily in a handmade Kentucky copper still and bottle it in the Elk Store.
